Setting a milestone that relates to your goal is a great way to know if the plan is working. Plus tie the milestone duration to your goal. For example, you're going for a crit race, aim for a 3 to 7 min milestone. Have a long sportive, aim to 10 to 20 min milestone.
There are times the training feels too easy, and you want to give it some stick. Sure you can do this, but it's best to trust the process and be honest with your feedback so the plan stays personalised to you.
